Computer Firewalls: not just for the government

 

A firewall blocks access to your computer from the Internet, both incoming and outgoing, in order to prevent your system and privacy from being compromised. After a little bit of initial configuration (that is beyond the scope of this site; read the readme files and documentation for your choice of firewall), a firewall should give you very little trouble, and will help stop hackers and viruses.

If you're like me, you want something free and easy. The first offering is Zone Alarm, which is a good product.

 

If you don't like Zone Alarm, then try out Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. The basic version for home users is free.
